How To Pack, The Nordic Way
It's not about minimalism. It's about being intentional—and following a few (simple) rules.
With our move coming up in less than three weeks, I have big packing energy (stress). Our new apartment in Stockholm is much smaller than our current house, so I have to think strategically. Packing the Nordic way, as I learned, means thinking in terms of function, quality and minimalism. It’s not about stuffing your suitcase with options—it’s about curating the right pieces that are versatile, thoughtfully made and quietly stylish. Here’s how to do it, whether you’re headed to Copenhagen, Stockholm or just channeling that cool, pared-back style on your next trip.
1. First, Create Color Harmony
Start by sticking with a neutral-ish color palette: white, navy, grey, olive, rose, black. These tones mix effortlessly. Then, pack for layering by thinking of your outfits in systems. A t-shirt + cardigan sweater + jeans = one outfit with a lot of range.
2. Use the Rule of 3s
There are a lot of packing formulas out there. The simplest method is to bring three tops, three bottoms and three pairs of shoes for a three- to five-day stay (adjust depending on the length of your trip). The idea is that every top should match every bottom. Include one elevated basic (like a crisp shirt or flowy pants) for dressing up.
If that doesn’t work for you, consider the 5-4-3-2-1 rule.
3. Prioritize Outerwear
In Nordic fashion, your coat is your outfit. One great jacket or coat should carry your look—a water-resistant trench, wool wrap or minimal puffer depending on the season.
4. Choose Footwear That Works Hard
Think: walkable, weather-appropriate, versatile. This could mean white leather sneakers, waterproof ankle boots or minimalist slides. Limit yourself to three pairs (or the number you decide on above^^) and wear the bulkiest shoes on the plane. More packing space!
5. Go Light on Accessories—But Make Them Count
Bring one tote, crossbody or belt bag. Simple jewelry: sculptural, gold or silver, no noise. A large scarf works doubles as a wrap or blanket for the plane or chilly air conditioning situations.
6. Pack a Slim Toiletry Kit
Stick with a versatile makeup look (base, concealer, mascara and a multi-purpose eyes-lips-cheek stick). Downsize to travel sizes of skincare and go for solid perfume or essential oil rollers to stay under the three-ounces limit for carry-on luggage. You can also buy reusable decanting bottles on Amazon.
7. Add a Little Joy
Pack something that grounds you: a small book, a journal, calming balm or herbal tea sachets. Nordic-style packing is about intentionality and comfort, not just efficiency.
8. Leave Room (the Hardest Part!)
Don’t pack your suitcase to the brim. Leave 10 to 20% empty space, if possible. That way, you can bring back some purchases and not feel panicked about squeezing them into an already-full bag. If you don’t end up buying something, you’ll give your existing items a little extra breathing room.
Bottom line: The Nordic way is less about being a strict minimalist and more about being intentional. Packing light lets you move easily, dress well and settle into whatever destination you're heading to—without feeling like you're living out of a bag.
Happy travels!
